After days of writing IEP’s, parent-teacher conferences, class homework and just life in general, we took a three day weekend and went to Amana. Jim, Heather and I piled into the Taurus and hit the road on Friday morning. The first stop was the welcome center in Lamoni, Iowa. We bought some Amish baskets there. The next big stop was Pella, Iowa. There is a great bakery there. Heather likes the almond poppyseed cakes and I like the spice dutch windmill cookies with the almonds.
We got to Amana around 5p.m. Unfortunately all the hotels were overpriced due to the Iowa-Wisconsin football game 😦 We got a room though and ate a family style meal at the Holiday Inn across the street.
The next morning we met up with our good friends Jerry and Cathy. We have known them for years. It was good to catch up with our friends again.
We went to the quilt store in rural Williamsburg and then went into Williamsburg to the Woolen Needle to look at the rug hooking wool. Next it was into Amana for lunch. Our favorite place there is the Brick House. There is always too much food though. There is salad, cottage cheese, sauerkraut relish, 2 types of bread, lemonade or tea, beans, corn, mashed potatoes and gravy, pickled ham, hot sauerkraut, and that is just if you have the meatless plate. Dessert comes with it. In my case, it was strawberry shortcake, yum!
After lunch, we walked around the village. There is a quilt store that was in a new location from the last time I’d been there. We enjoyed our time walking and talking. Soon it was time for them to head back home. Jim went and took a nap and Heather and I walked a little more. Heather and I went over to the outlet mall in Williamburg to the Corning store. I found a new fry pan and Heather got a saucepan. Then it was back to Amana and a night at the Guest House motel.
Early Sunday, we got back in the car and headed home. It was sunny but windy, The clouds looked like wavy hair in the sky. We stopped in Lamoni again and picked up another basket to put by Jim’ s chair for his magazines.
Home again and back to work tomorrow. How fast long weekends go. Watch for some pictures in the next few days.
