The day after

November 28, 2009

Another Thanksgiving has come and gone. It was lonely but I tried to make the best of it. I had pumpkin pudding, cranberry bread and relish and cheese pizza. I called my mother-in-law as I know she was spending the day alone too. Several of her friends had said they would bring some food over to her but when I talked to her, neither of them had done it.

I am trying to get the energy up to do some cleaning done as the house is a disaster. I heard a large metal bowl hit the floor during the night so Shasta must have been busy remodeling things. So far I have one cupboard organized and can see part of the table. I don’t understand how some people get enjoyment fom cleaning. It is so thankless as it is so soon undone by others.

I have made real progress on my Christmas rug. I have to watch it as it is getting heavy and making my wrist ache.

I am resisting doing  my school work. I got home Tuesday night to see two new messages about paperwork I need to fix. That gets me down somewhat as I thought I was making progress on how it was to be done. It is annoying though that it was sent at the end of the day rather than when I was actually at work.

Much to be thankful for

November 26, 2009

There is no getting around the fact that it would be easy to feel down this time of year. My daughter will be spending the holiday with her husband’s family and my husband is visiting his brother in another state. The family I grew up with lives many miles from here so tomorrow it will be just the cat and I and the cat may decide to sleep through the day. 🙂

In spite of all this, in spite of the bad economic news, the news of budget cuts, the news of H1N1, the war in Afghanistan, etc., etc., etc. I can thank God for many blessings. May family is well and most are gainfully employed. The younger members are still hopeful that they to will eventually be employed. No one has any major illnesses to deal with. We have friends to help us through the hard times. We don’t have to go to bed hungry. I am thankful for all that. I am also thankful we have enough resources to help a few other people along the way. So happy thanksgiving to all of you and may God Bless you.

Fan Bird Carving

November 24, 2009

I took a personal day today as a couple came in from Michigan to teach fan bird carving. This was historically a Northern European Folk art. To find out about it, look up this website:

First we practiced carving a fan and then moved on to carving a dove and a hummingbird. What fun!

The wings are notched and then the individual feathers are cut with a drawknife. The individual feathers are twisted out and interlocked.

I came home with a drawknife, a pelican knife and a book 🙂 Now I will have to practice this. It wasn’t easy to cut the feathers evenly but it was very forgiving.

Lazy Sunday

November 22, 2009

I spent part of yesterday running around. I sat at the raffle ticket table for two hours. Heather stopped by and we went throught the Kaw Valley Woodcarvers annual show. I bought a few pieces of wood and saw the people who are teaching the class I am going to take on Monday. They carve fan birds. It looked like it should be fun.

We next went to get something to eat at Jimmy John’s. It is number 6 for us, the vegetarian sandwich. Next door was a beauty shop so we both got our hair cut.

Next stop was Target to buy a Scrabble Jr. to use with my students. I have played the regular Scrabble with them but some find that too hard. I dropped Heather off and went to Saturday service. Next it was a trip to Hy-Vee and picking up a cheese pizza at Papa John’s.

I found a new-to-me blog with amazing beading. Check it out.

I plan to spend some time rughooking today. I need to destress from the week. A highlight? of this week was having a student telling the principal and his father how he would rather go to prison than go to my class. 😦

I had a final on Wednesday night for the reading class I am taking. It took over two hours. The next day was a meeting at the co-op. I was so exhausted I started crying during the meeting. I felt really stupid over that. The meeting was about how we needed to better goals, write better updates, test the kids more, do a better job, etc, etc. It makes the job so discouraging.

I like to watch the show Monk. It is in the final episodes at the moment. This last week’s episode was particularly interesting to me. Monk has had to work as a private consultant for years as his wife’s death and his mental illness has kept him off the police force. Finally, he is reinstated. He is given low level jobs and treated like what he know is irrelevant. He manages to solve the case in spite of all this but decides that ultimately, he will quit and go back to be a consultant. It does provide food for thought.

Early Friday Morning

November 20, 2009

It isn’t fair that the body wakes one up early when there is a chance to get a few more hours of sleep. It is 3:30 in the morning here. I was exhausted when I went to bed. I hooked for a few minutes but didn’t even have the energy for that. I had a meeting in Holton yesterday so I was out of the building yesterday. Now just one morning day and it is a three day weekend for me.

I took Monday off to take the fan bird class so next week is a one day week! I hope to get some picking up around the house and spend some quality time working on my crafts.

I have much of my Christmas shopping done now. The in-laws are wrapped up and Jim took them with him when he went . I have stuff for the paras and my secret santa person at work.I found some t-shirts on sale at the Mary Englebreit website that looked cute so they are getting them. Hopefully they like them.

Our friends from Minnesota are going to become first time grandparents. Their daughter and her husband live in Oklahoma and I think around still going to Bible college. They seem so young.

Jim has the camera with him so I will need to find the Olympus. The megapixels aren’t as big so maybe it will be easier to upload them.

Hope you can get some sleep.

Sleepless Sunday night

November 16, 2009

Sunday nights are hard nights for me to get to sleep. I had to take a nap this afternoon as I was so exhausted. Now I guess it is going to take a while to get to sleep.
We went to Riverdance last night. It was such a fantastic show. I bought the video, thinking I might share it with my students at Christmas time. I wish I could move and dance like that. There was so much joy in the movement. It also reminded me of playing in band and performing in high school. It is too bad most of us have to leave that behind when we leave school.
The woodcarver show is this weekend. I volunteered to sit at the raffle table for 2 hours on Saturday. I need to take off a day next Monday so I can take a fan bird carving class. It will be a good break for me.
Saturday, Jim and I went to the carveout for a while. I got a little tree ornament and part of a snowman done. I will have to get them sanded so I can get them painted.

And I thought last week was bad…..

November 14, 2009

Two of my bosses chewed on me through e-mail. My ill student continued to have problems. The nurse had to call 911 when his emergency medicine didn’t work in the allowed amount of time. This happened at the same time he was getting sick, two other students decided it was time to fight in the hall and my IEP was starting.  My student managed to come yesterday but the pharmacy messed up his prescription so that led to a few tense moments while that was being straightened out. Unfortunately, he was sick again last night and couldn’t come today.

I do know things could be worse but this is an all around painful time.

I need to study for my final on Wednesday. I will be relieved when that is over with. I have learned a lot but working all day then being in class until 8 is a real drag. There also seems like too much information to try to study for. Unfortuately, I don’t feel that motivated to study at the moment.

I work on one of my rugs tonight. It is a Christmas rug with a variety of little scenes on it.

I hope things turn around soon.

This weekend shouldn’t end too soon

November 9, 2009

It was another hard week at school. One student had big health problems, another had behavior problems, and the others were somewhere in between. I had my job evaluation and felt demoralized again.

The snake that had crawled into the building a few weeks back so my co-worker had put it in the fish tank. Wouldn’t you know it managed to escape. They found it in one of the cubbies. It is gone now thankfully. There is disagreement on what kind it is. The principal says it is a bull snake. The paras say it is a massasauga rattlesnake. Either way, thank goodness it is gone.

Friday night we went to White Concert Hall to see a comedian brought in by our church to raise money for the Topeka Rescue Mission. The place was packed. I hope they raised a lot of funds.

Yesterday was a rug hooking day. I got there late and ended up one of the last people there. Not many people showed up. It was in the 70s and beautiful. I guess some were at the KU game.  I was working on a Christmas rug which I hope to take a photo of soon.

We went to church last night so we slept in this morning. This afternoon, we went to the Kaw Valley Woodcarvers meeting. There were some beautiful pieces there. Maybe some day I will be able to carve like that.

It is a staff development day on Monday so it is all day meetings. I would like some time to get some back work done but I suppose that won’t happen.

Did you watch this show when you were young?

November 2, 2009

I did. I was watching Art in the 21st Century and his nephew was talking about his art. I remember being inspired by him.

It was a night for old horror movies

November 1, 2009

I don’t think the new horror films are that interesting. I watched the old classics this Halloween.

The other film I watched tonight The Body Snatcher with Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi.

Hope you had a great Halloween!
